Welcome to Define Homeopathy.com

Homeopathy has been around more or less in it's present form since it was proposed as a viable treatment for many ailments by German Doctor Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) In 1796. He is generally recognised as the modern day founder of homeopathy as we know it.

He was conducting experiments upon himself, using cinchona bark as a treatment for malaria, and noticed that upon taking the bark he developed the symptoms of malaria. Thus he proposed the principle of curing like with like. This was quite contrary to medical thinking of the time which was to treat illness with a preparation that directly opposed the symptoms of whatever illness you were treating.

Actually if we think about it this is not too far removed from the principle of innoculation. Which uses extremely weakened forms of the disease to be innoculated against, introduced into the system of the patient to be innoculated. Thus allowing the body to manufacture it's own antibodies to combat the disease in the future.

Homeopathy has been controversial pretty much from those early days. The main objection seeming to be the extreme dilution of substances used. Dilution to the point that, in some preparations, there are actually no molecules left of the original active ingredient. Proponents of homeopathy say that water has a "memory" which allows it to retain the properties of these ingredients. (Check the latest information on this at the link opposite "Homeopathy Vindicated").

Many tests and trials have been conducted over the subsequent years, and there is still no definitive proof one way or the other regarding the efficacy of homeopathy as a treatment. Although it is safe to say that, used as directed, modern homeopathic remedies will cause no harm. Many people use them regularly and swear by them.

As a final thought for this article Samuel Hahnemann tested in excess of 100 different homeopathic remedies during his lifetime. That lifetime extending to the venerable age of 88 years. A monumental age in those days!
